Checking for a Warrant in Todd County
Todd County posts no county-run list of every active warrant, so the public route runs through the Minnesota court system. MCRO Case Search reaches many public District Court cases filed here, and a party entry can carry a red active-warrant flag. Treat that flag as a reason to look closer. It is not a final answer. Have four things ready before you search: full legal name, date of birth, case number, and the missed hearing date.
- Search MCRO by name, case, citation, or attorney, and set the court location to Todd County.
- Open Case Details and the Register of Actions, not just the party flag.
- Call Todd County Court Administration at (320) 357-5005 or use a courthouse terminal when the record looks thin.
- Call the Todd County Sheriff's Office at (320) 732-2157, or write to Records at (320) 732-7748.
- For a citation, use the Court Payment Center and ask what a payment resolves.
The MCRO overview explains those routes and their limits.
Todd County's Single Warrant Court System
There is no justice of the peace in Todd County, no county criminal court, and no municipal criminal court issuing its own warrants. Minnesota runs one unified District Court system, and Todd County cases sit in the Seventh Judicial District at the Long Prairie courthouse. City police write citations, but a Todd-filed criminal or traffic warrant is still a District Court record. You never have to work out which local court issued the process.
| Matter | Where it is handled | Where the public checks it |
|---|---|---|
| Felony or misdemeanor charge | Todd County District Court | MCRO, courthouse terminal, Court Administration |
| Missed hearing | Todd County District Court | Register of Actions, Court Administration |
| Traffic failure to appear | District Court in the filing county | MCRO citation search, Court Payment Center |
Note: A Todd County city name does not tell you which court holds a case, because Staples and Osakis cross county lines.
Todd County Warrant Types
The label on a Todd County warrant changes what happens next. An arrest warrant follows a probable-cause review. A bench warrant follows a missed court obligation. A Sign and Release Warrant, added in 2024, does not authorize an arrest at all.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | Complaint and sworn facts reviewed for probable cause | Todd County District Court judge |
| Bench or failure-to-appear warrant | Missed hearing, missed condition, or unpaid court obligation | Todd County District Court judge |
| Sign and Release Warrant | Qualifying first failure to appear after a summons is returned undeliverable | District Court under Minn. Stat. §629.415 |
| Traffic failure to appear | Unpaid ticket or missed traffic date | District Court in the filing county |
Why a Missing Todd County Warrant Record Proves Nothing
A blank result feels like good news, and it often is. It can also be a dead end. Minnesota court rules let a Todd County judge restrict complaint, indictment, arrest, or search-warrant material when publication could cause flight or hamper an investigation. Timing creates other gaps, because a warrant can be issued before it appears in a public feed, or recalled while the online entry still shows the older status.
- Sealed or restricted complaint and warrant material
- Juvenile and family records with their own access rules
- Active investigative data protected under Minn. Stat. §13.82

Inside a Todd County Warrant Record
Todd County court and sheriff records carry a predictable set of fields. That helps you match a warrant record to the right person rather than a same-name stranger.
| Case or Citation Number | The most reliable identifier. No current warrant-number key is published, so use the case number shown as [case number]. |
|---|---|
| Warrant Type or Reason | Bench warrant, failure to appear, arrest warrant, or a Sign and Release entry. |
| Issuing Authority | The District Court judge who authorized the process. |
| Bond and Status | Cash bail, a bond condition, or a no-bond hold, plus a status such as issued, active, served, or recalled. |
The 2018 Todd County Warrant Report and Its Limits
The Todd County website still hosts a file titled Outstanding Warrants, the only county-published warrant document on offer. The copy there is printed 08/01/2018, and no update schedule or complete-list disclaimer is published, so a person listed in 2018 may have resolved the matter years ago. The file still works as a schema example: warrant number, case references, type, offense degree, bond, fine, status, and issuing authority. The historical report should always be read with its 2018 date attached.

Sign and Release Warrants in Todd County
Minnesota changed one corner of its failure-to-appear process on January 1, 2024. Under Minn. Stat. §629.415, a court can issue a Sign and Release Warrant in qualifying circumstances, including a first failure to appear after a mailed summons comes back undeliverable. The statute says this warrant does not authorize an arrest and does not require bail. Instead, an officer who encounters the person collects updated address information, completes the defendant-information and court-date form, hands over a new date, and clears the warrant at the scene. The Judicial Branch fast facts describe the sequence. Not every Todd County warrant qualifies, and this is a court process rather than county amnesty.
If You Have a Warrant in Todd County
Identify the case first. Then decide on a plan with a lawyer. The Minnesota Judicial Branch warns that appearing in person while an arrest warrant is active can end in custody.
Important: Talk to a licensed Minnesota attorney before turning yourself in, and remember that no legitimate court or deputy will demand payment by phone to cancel a warrant.
A Todd County case can resolve through a new court date, an appearance before a judge, posting the bail a judge set, a payment on a payable citation, or a defense motion asking the court to recall the warrant. A low-income defendant facing possible jail time can apply for a public defender. Clearing a missed court date follows a similar path. The steps sit on the Todd County bench warrant search page.
Bond and Fee Questions After a Todd County Warrant
Three kinds of money come up in Todd County warrant conversations. Bond secures a future court appearance. Fines close out a charge, and records fees buy copies without clearing anything.
| Item | What it is and where it is handled |
|---|---|
| Cash bail | Posted as the court or jail directs, subject to refund and forfeiture rules |
| Surety bond | A state-authorized agent's guarantee, for a nonrefundable fee and possible collateral |
| Sheriff report copies | $0.25 per page through the Records Unit |
| Data search and retrieval | Listed at $21 to $75 per hour, with the rate confirmed first |
Media fees apply to a CD or USB copy in Todd County, and no bond schedule or surrender window is published.
Todd County Warrant Records and Public Access
Minnesota presumes government data are public unless a law makes them not public, and court records follow parallel rules. Sealed complaints stay closed. Juvenile matters, active investigative files, and protected identifiers in Todd County records can still be withheld too.
Key Rules:
Minn. Stat. §13.03 gives the public a right to inspect public data at reasonable times.
Minn. Stat. §13.82 classifies law-enforcement data and protects active investigative material.
Minnesota Rule of Public Access 8 allows inspection where a record is kept while omitting protected fields remotely.
Minn. Stat. §629.415 defines the Sign and Release Warrant that does not authorize arrest.
Public access is a research tool, not a licence to track people.

Data Practices Requests for Todd County Warrant Records
A written data practices request is the other lawful route when the court file itself is not what you need. Todd County sends requests to the Sheriff's Records Unit, and the records page lists the charges. Email, fax, mail, or a walk-in visit all work. Keep it narrow. Name the record you want, add a date range, and give the case or citation number. Ask for electronic delivery when that option exists. If part gets withheld, the agency should cite the statute it relies on. Expect to prove who you are, and note that Todd County treats a request as abandoned if you fail to answer a prepayment or clarification request within ten days.
Todd County Warrants by City
City police in Todd County write citations and work local incidents. Judicial questions go back to the District Court holding the case. Staples and Osakis each cross a county line, so the filing county decides which court.
